Kerala Excursions
Last week three teachers and I traveled to the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. One of two communist states in India, this coastal state boasts of immense and diverse beauty, friendly inhabitants, and unique architecture. In fact, its nickname is “God’s Country” for its spectacular, varied beauty. All-in-all, I would have to describe Kerala as “softer.” People are more laid-back and gentle, the pace (and traffic) less frenzied, less ostentatious religious buildings, and tasty food that is not as spicy/hot as that in Tamil Nadu. During this week, we traveled throughout southern portion of the state, relying on public transportation (buses, train, ferry), eating at cafés frequented by locals, and staying at inexpensive hotels. Countless numbers of times we were assisted by the kindness of locals who gave us suggestions regarding logistics, ensured we got on the correct bus, and helped us pass the time on the long bus rides.
