While in Bagan, we also visited a workshop where Myanmar’s famous lacquerware was being made. It was fascinating to see how the pieces started with moulded bamboo (or woven with horse hair, then covered with black resin paste and dried, washed, polished, given additional layers of lacquer and then engraved with a stylus. The showroom had beautiful pieces for sale, ranging from small simple cups to large accordion screens, completely decorated with daily life scenes in traditional red, green, pale blue, and yellow.
